Hi Scott, My opinion is that the tree does best in a part-shade situation in rich, moist soil. Deer truly love these leaves so caging is necessary unless deer are fenced out. I have heard that these grow to pretty respectable heights but for me they’ve always made a rounded crown and without pruning there are lots of lower branches that can be reached, and the flowers are very numerous. I suppose you could use a stepladder, too. I do have a nice planting of one of these coming on, so make sure to hit “waitlist.”
