Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) potted plant, gallon or 9-inch-deep pot, organic
Family: Pepper (Piperaceae)
Hardy to Zones 9 to 12, otherwise greenhoused and protected from frost
(Awa, Awa-Awa) long-lived shrub of the tropical rainforest, a sterile cultigen of the wild progenitor (Piper wichmanni) native to the Islands of the South Pacific Ocean. Traditional use in the islands of Oceania: Roots, fresh or dried, ground up and used to make a thick beverage. Participants in the kava ceremony experience a numbing effect, skeletal muscle relaxation, enhanced mood and telepathy. Used often in peacemaking. I have tried the roots of our cultivar and they are quite nice, with a root-beer taste, and a strong numbing effect–it is a good kind! Plant prefers high rainfall or frequent watering and fertile yet fast-draining soils in the part shade. They may be greenhoused with good effect and should be given a 5-gallon pot to start and kept out of the bright sun. Space plants 6 feet apart.
Potted plant, gallon size or 9-inch-deep pot size, certified organically grown
