Family: Trumpetvine (Bignoniacea)

Hardy to Zones 10 to 11, otherwise kept small and potted, brought indoors for winter.
Deciduous tree native to Argentina and Bolivia, growing to about 50 feet tall and equally as wide.  Blue-purple trumpeting flowers occur during the spring, literally lighting up the trees.  Excellent choice for a street or yard tree in the tropics, I hold a lifelong memory of walking down Jacaranda street in Nairobi while the flowering display was on, the entire street swimming in exotic perfume. The leaves are used in traditional south American herbalism to make an antibacterial wash.  Plant prefers hot, sunny, and humid weather, growing best in fertile, well-drained soil.  Will withstand a significant amount of drought.  Nick seed, soak overnight, and plant warm.  Germ in 1 to 2 weeks.
