Herbaceous perennial with leathery leaves and bright yellow flowers with distinctive black wings. Seedpods decorative, blue-black. Native to the American Southeastern seaboard and Southern states. Blue dye-plant. Traditional usage of the tincture of dried root (TWM, Eclectic): Sore throat, smoldering infections. Plant prefers full sun and dry or gravelly soil. Scarify seed vigorously, soak overnight and plant in warm conditions, fast-draining soil. Germination takes 7 to 14 days. Work seedlings up in successively larger pots and set to landscape after sufficiently sized. Space 2 to 3 feet apart.

I forgot to scarify and soak these seeds before planting…will they just take a week or 2 longer to germinate or will it take another whole year? is it a lost cause?

Hello Aidan, Thanks for writing. I have been having good luck with these seeds but I did scarify–they have an extremely hard seedcoat. I do think you’re going to get some results within a week or two after planting. I do not think its a lost cause but low germ is likely. I haven’t seen these overwinter and give another flush but its possible, especially since the seedcoat has not been scarified. Richo
