Hawthorn, Chinese (Shan-zha) (Crataegus pinnatifida) packet of 10 seeds

$4.95

Family: Rose (Rosaceae)

Hardy to zone 5 to 9

(Chinese Haw)  Deciduous tree to 12 feet tall, flowering white in the spring.   Native to China, this is a pretty, open-formed landscape tree that produces red fruits that are much larger than other hawthornes.  Traditional use (TCM):  one of the Chinese herbs that relieves stagnation, helps digest fats and dispels blood stasis.  Used in treatment of metabolic disease, hypertension and high cholesterol.  Plants prefer sun to part shade and a well-drained soil.  The fruits are as big as a crab apple, tasting sour and sweet, dried and used in tea or decoction.  Tree prefers well-drained garden soils and is relatively drought and cold tolerant, requiring little care once established.  Sow the seeds anytime.  It will take about a year for them to come up, sometimes as long as 2 years for some of the seeds.  Sow about 5 seeds per gallon pot, 1/2 to 1 inch deep, and mulch with decomposed leaves.  Label well. Keep pot in the cool shade, and water occasionally, especially if rain or snowfall is not abundant.   Once seedlings emerge, they may be pricked to individual pots and grown on for a year or more, until the trees are large enough to transplant to the landscape.

Packet contains 10 seeds
