      Hi Ellen,
The plants are sold singly. Once you replant our starter to a gallon pot, it will take about 3 weeks to establish a large mother plant that can be divided, as these are a grass, rhizomatous.

Hi Chrissy, We list this only up to zone 8 due to its preference for cooler northerly climes. I would suggest lemongrass for a 9b. richo

Can someone help me–do i plant the sweet grass starter plants in a pot or directly in the ground–i am in chicago–also how much space do i need to allot for their growth and will it return each year?

hi jacinda, one advantage to planting in a pot is that there is less likelihood of having regular grasses mix in with the planting, which can be quite confusing. That said sweetgrass can be planted outdoors in the garden if you like, and would be perennial in Chicago. You can allow about a foot square per plant for starters. Richo

  9. Question

    Stephanie Naftal

Curious if you think it’s worth buying just one. I’m worried it won’t get here in Montana until after the snow falls and ground freezes.

Hi Stephanie, In answer to your question, I always recommend buying in 3’s. Not only are the plants happier to have companions, but this provides a bit of insurance and also stretches the shipping dollar. I think you should get the sweetgrass in the spring. Richo

Ok it’s spring!!! Even in Montana! Do you think, given our cooler nights but sunny summer days, that these will do ok in either part shade or full sun? As long as they have wet feet? We have a shaded pond where I grow my nettles (your seeds, thank you) and a little creek that gets more sun where we have forget me nots. What do you think?

Hi Stephanie, In Montana the sweetgrass will do best in moist soil in the sun to part shade. The main thing about planting sweetgrass is to make sure you don’t mix it with other grasses–it can be hard to tell them apart. Sweetgrass grows very well in the northern boarder states. richo

Logan, This is listed from 3 to 7 and enjoys cool weather (the main harvest is from Canada). I personally always push the zone limits and am often pleasantly surprised. You could try a cool, shady spot. One of the main producers of sweetgrass for years worked out of California, so that may indicate heat tolerance. r

Tampa is a 9b, a little hot for a zone 7 sweetgrass. However we’re a zone 8 here and we grow it. r

      Hi Janette,
Thanks for getting in touch about this. After reality-checking the monograph, I changed the Zone designation from 3 to 7 to 3 to 8. There are just too many people (including myself!) successfully growing the plant in warm environments. You would want to choose a moist, cool and shady spot if you can find one. One of the main producers of sweetgrass for years worked out of California, so that may indicate heat tolerance. r

my sweetgrass from last year stayed in a 1-gallon pot over winter, died back, and then sprang forth so readily this year! i am really excited to see it! i’d like to transplant into boxes — do you have any suggestions for width/depth of planter boxes that might suffice and make this grass happy enough to continue on with its life? thank you for this beautiful seed!

hi lena, sweetgrass is shallow-rooted so a 6-inch-deep box should be fine, a couple of feet wide would be good. richo
