Grown at Tesuque reservation in NM. These produce fruits that are either flattened like a bowl gourd or with a single bulbous apendage where the stem attaches (like the one in the photo). On any given vine, many of the fruits will turn out smaller than the one in the photo. Traditionally, the gourds are cured by hanging beneath the eaves and scraped to remove any mold. Then, the seeds and pith are removed through a small hole. A spare handful of beads, peas, corn, or small rocks are introduced through the hole, after which it is patched. The gourd is then pierced through with a carven stick. In the case of bulbous form, the bulb is oriented up. In the case of flattened form, the stick is often pierced through the sides, looking like a giant chunk of potato on a skewer. Plants prefer regular garden soil to poor soil and a sunny position in the open garden or drylands. I’ve seen them volunteer around habitations where they love to climb up a rough wall, and indeed do much better if allowed to climb, with the fruits hanging down, instead of sprawling on the ground. A perfect subject for that tall tripod made out of Empress Tree (Paulownia) poles. Plant “ears up” in hills of fast-draining soil. Help the vine find its best purchase on the tripod. Water sparingly. Once the fruit attains full size, twist the stem to encourage early maturation and drying. Harvest after first frost.
