Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) potted plant, organic

$11.00$102.00

Family: Crowfoot (Ranunculaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

Medicinal Native American Root

Native to the Eastern hardwood forests, this plant adapts beautifully to the shade garden. Choose a protected spot with deep, slightly acidic, loamy soil and dappled shade. We offer potted goldenseal for those that would like to plant a patch during the spring or summer months, when it is not seasonal to plant bare roots. Early orders will be shipped while plants are barely breaking the surface of the pot, a good time to transport them without breakage and a good stage for planting as well.  These are sturdy adult plants that will likely bear fruit within a year or two after planting.  Traditional usage:  TWM, bitter, astringent and antibacterial.  Plant to rich soil in hardwood forest dappled shade, shade garden or shaded greenhouse and mulch.  Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart.

Does goldenseal spread similar to comfrey? Will I end up with more goldenseal plants as they grown and mature or do I need to order the exact amount I want?

Hi Carla, Thanks for writing. Comfrey is one of the fastest-growing plants I know, and Goldenseal is one of the slowest-growing plants I know. Comfrey likes full sun and Goldenseal likes shade. Goldenseal is patch-forming and does best when planted several plants together. It can take 3 years or more for them to become rhizomatous and begin to spread. You can find out more about all this buy reading the goldenseal chapter in “Growing At-Risk.” All the best, richo

Hi, I ordered some Goldenseal plants and plan to start them in containers the first year. Do you have any suggestions on a specific soil brand that is best to use? And how often do they need to be watered?

hey anastacia, thanks for writing, goldenseal does pretty well in pots as long as its kept shaded and moist. any good quality potting mix will do, like black gold brand, and add a bit of forest soil to inoculate. here’s a link to the youtube that shows how to plant goldenseal in pots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kmkXUAASmE&t=20s

  5. Question

    Richo,
I just received my goldenseal plants in the mail, very excited! Question: I get voles, seems like more and more of them each year. Can’t seem to find an effective way to get rid of them (preferably without killing them). Should I plant my goldenseal in a gopher shield net? If so, what size would you recommend? Or maybe pots instead? Thank you!

  6. Question

    Alyssa M

I live in zone 8b-9 and would love to grow Goldenseal here. I have a lot of shade trees in my back yard with a mix mostly of pine, oaks, and maple trees. Would this potentially grow in a shaded area of my back yard? I have a couple of areas in my back yard that I think it would grow well, but the heat here will soon be in the 90’s. Would it be better to try to grow in a more controlled environment like a greenhouse or indoors? …or Am I wasting my time trying?

      Hi Alyssa,
I can relate to wanting to grow goldenseal, we all need to do that. A forest-dependent medicinal herb does not like to grow indoors. It needs the mycorrhizal associations of a cool forest floor. It needs to have perfect air circulation and dappled light of sun and stars to be happy. I suggest reading the goldenseal chapter in my book “Growing At-Risk.” I suggest getting some goldenseal plants from us (they are just now breaking ground, a good time to ship them) and planting under the maple tree. You can also plant them in the shade under the benches in the greenhouse, nestled into 4 inch deep flats with plenty of coir around the crowns. If they kick in in this situation, you can produce some monumental plants. Richo

I have a question regarding sending them out in September. Would this be too late in the season to plant in the mid-Atlantic? Should we keep indoors until the next spring? Thanks!

Hello Charis, We don’t sell goldenseal potted plants in September. Find the GOLDENSEAL ROOTS item and order that. Goldenseal roots are planted in the fall and come up in the spring. The plants and/or the roots cannot be kept indoors through the winter–they require a cold dormancy. Goldenseal is in short supply this year and probably ongoing. I noticed the stock is already drawn down significantly. Please order soon in order to receive your roots. We will send them in October. Richo

hi suzubelle, thank you for your interest in goldenseal. we have the plant listed down to a zone 4 and I think they grow better in situ, hardier that way, than in pots. just plant to shade garden and mulch well. if shade garden or woodlands not available, then keep in pots, in the shade, in a greenhouse if possible. here’s a link for you, you’ll have to paste it into a browser https://strictlymedicinalseeds.com/product/goldenseal-hydrastis-canadensis-potted-plant-organic/

  7. Question

    Crissy

I have a magnolia tree under which I grow blueberries and lingonberries in Boise, ID. I’m thinking it is the same soil that would assist goldenseal and ginseng. I have read it is not good to plant in the spring, as it should establish itself over the winter. I’m fine to purchase for spring or wait till fall if that is the better timeframe that maximizes success for the plants. Should I purchase for spring or wait till fall? Is the Magnolia a bad idea to plant under?

      Hi Crissy,
This kind of thing is best resolved by moving ahead and planting and seeing how things work out. I would suggest giving the goldenseal a deep mulch of rotted leaves or coco coir. Our potted plants do fine when planted early in the spring. Otherwise you can take advantage of the fall bare-root special that is less expensive.

Hi, would the goldenseal plant grow well in a large container in a shaded area. I’m going to be moving towards the end of summer, so I don’t want to commit to in ground gardening, but I’d like to take my plants with me. I just want to go ahead and establish some plants now.

Yes, we have often done this–planted goldenseal to 3-gal pots and mulched well, kept in the shade. Sometimes they grow better this way on account of all the compost.

Hi Carol, I’m confused because this comment was left on the goldenseal potted plant item on our website. If you have a packet of goldenseal seeds, you can plant the entire packet in a 3-gallon pot. If you have goldenseal plants or live roots, you can plant three to a 3-gallon pot. Richo

I once had a large planting of goldenseal in the moist shade under the benches in my greenhouse, all planted in deep flats, less than 20 lbs of soil each, and the plants grew fantastically.
