Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) tree in 3 inch pot, organic

$7.50

Family:  Ginkgo (Ginkgoaceae)

Hardy to Zones 3 to 12.

(Bai-guo, Maidenhair Tree)  Perennial, deciduous, dioecious tree native to eastern China. Ginkgo  is not self-fertile, it is dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant). Both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.  We cannot sex our seedlings until they become adults, which may take years, so its pot luck as far as sexual identity is concerned.  We normally plant things of this nature in 3s. Darwin called it a “living fossil.”   Trees prefer full sun, moderately moist soil, and are pansies about their roots–they do not like root disturbance.  Maidenhair trees are also exceedingly beautiful, with lithe, humanoid trunks and deeply grooved, bi-lobed leaves.  The leaves filter toxins out of the air. We sell unsexed, potted individuals that may be male or female.  Space trees 30 feet apart.

I don’t have room for a tree but you have a picture of Ginkgo biloba used as a hedge. Will the tree thrive as a hedge and how best to accomplish this?

The photo of the ginkgo hedge is right there on the ginkgo seeds page at strictlymedicinalseeds.com–here’s the link src=”https://strictlymedicinalseeds.com/product/ginkgo-ginkgo-biloba-packet-of-10-seeds/” alt=”ginkgo hedge” />
You plant the trees six inches apart and keep them pruned back to a hedge shape. Chinese gardeners are good at this, western gardeners have a ways to go…
