$11.00

Family:  Geranium (Geraniaceae)

Hardy to Zone 8 to 12, otherwise grown as a summer annual or potted plant, brought in for the winter

Evergreen mounding perennial native to South Africa.  The plant smells great and is forgiving to the touch, a soft mound of leaves giving rise to a sparse crown of red-purple flowers spring through midsummer.  The fleshy root is a traditional Zulu remedy for treating upper respiratory infections, including bronchitis, sinusitis, sore throat, colds, flu and tuberculosis (TB). New studies are showing a potent anti-HIV effect. Plant prefers full sun, moderate water and fertile soil.

hi chrissy, thanks for your inquiry. We’re partial to umcka geranium and are working on it from a couple different angles–seed production and working up seedlings. Hope to have these again available by the fall. Richo

Oh great to hear! I will be buying as an experiment because I’m in 9b (central florida) and nasturtium takes off for me here and it’s in the family so hoping for anywhere similar Success but not holding my breath. I was ask wondering why there are no seeds for sale and only tubers… are they not successful by seed? Short life span? No seeds? Other reason? those are my last questions for the day. Thank you!!! …and yes, they’ve already been hanging out in my waitlist. 🙂

hello motley, thanks for writing! The taproot has a constricted neck that can’t be divided, and really no stems for stem cuttings. The plant does make seeds that work.

  5. Question

    Shannon

How big are these plants? For $20 each, should be a good size? haha 🙂

Yes, they are pretty nice sized to be sure, and if one were to count up all the energy used to produce a rare botanical of this calibre, $20.00 each is a bargain. They do make seed. Unlike many other geraniums, these have a tuberous root which stays put and does not run out to more plants, nor do they make pups, and cuttings are not really an option. Its all seedgrown. Richo

Hi Richo – Will you have seeds as well, or only the plants? I’d like to try my hand and growing them from seed. Also, if I DO get a plant, is it possible to harvest part of the root and leave the rest of the plant intact to continue growing?

      Hi Catie,
Given that Umcka medicine is in the tuber, it is possible to remove the tuber without damaging the crown, and the plant can live on. My situation here is that I have some mother plants (gave them kelp tea yesterday) which are looking very healthy right now. I always get a bit of a heartjump when I see seeds on them, and generally plant them back right away. I’ll try to save some for you. When I came back from Kenya in 2009 I had 100g of seeds and when I offered them online I couldn’t GIVE them away. Now everybody wants them. Isn’t that just the way it goes? Richo

Oh, thank you so much! Most likely, I will probably get a plant AND seeds if you have them. I noticed above that I might need to call you to order the plant? Please let me know. I have been reading all kinds of wonderful things about it and would love to have it/start it with the rest of my medicinal herbs. Thanks! Catie

      Hi Janet,
Please do click “waitlist” for both the seeds and the plants. I will probably have the seeds sooner than the plants–prospects look good.
