Evergreen perennial native to South Africa. The mother plants are of the “Attar of Roses” variety. Please be aware that scented geraniums grown from seed may resemble the mother plant yet are likely to have unique fragrances. In fact, each seedling produces a slightly different chemotype. Therefore, those seeking unique fragrances will grow from seed, and once that fragrance is obtained, if more plants are desired, will make clones. Scented geranium exudes a sensual and calming fragrance. Sow seed in spring, or indoors, anytime. Prepare a deep flat with fast-draining potting soil. Seeds are fitted with a corkscrew aril so it is best to orient seeds point down into the surface (the way they would drill in in nature) and cover with about 1/8 inch of sand or grit. Keep warm, evenly moist and in the light until germination, which occurs within 3 weeks. Seedlings germinate up through the sand. The third leaf is a true leaf that shows the scalloped margin so characteristic of this genus. Pot up to successively larger pots, always using the fast draining mix. Keep plants warm and in the light, and water when they droop. Plants grow quickly and bloom. Keep in pot culture on windowsill or summer patio or transplant out to frost-free rock garden one foot apart.

hi terri, i like to keep mine super well-drained. i use a pot 4/5 full of cactus mix, drill the seed into that and then cover with 1/4 inch of fine white pumice. they germinate up through that and it holds them fast and disallows damping off. r

I purchased these recently and planted about a third; all germinated readily but then keeled over in the first incidence of damping off I’ve had in years. I used my usual seed-starting mix without any sand or pumice. Any advice? I don’t want to start over only to see another tiny carnage in my nursery closet. BTW the packet contains considerably more than 20 seeds, thanks!

This seed will produce progeny of various colors and scents. We think it is fun to grow them out from seed and test each individual to see what it smells like and how intense the colors on the flowers are. Then if we like it, we can reproduce more plants with the same traits by making cuttings. Anybody can do this and it is a great project with very open-ended potential for pleasant results.
