Perennial flowering blue to 6 inches, native to Europe. Short-stemmed and large-flowered, these are very showy. Best on limestone substrate, in rockery or evermoist alpine garden. Source of pharmaceutical-grade gentian root for bittering. Hints on germinating and growing Gentians: Sow seeds as soon as possible after receipt. Use ceramic pots filled with peaty mix to 1/2 inch below the rim, sprinkle in the seeds liberally, hold the seeds down with a 1/4 inch deep layer of sharp grit. Place pot in cool, moist shade. Germination is in the spring. Best in fast-draining soils or rockery. Water frequently. When grown at elevation, give full sun, but in the lowlands, give shade.
