(3 customer reviews)

$4.95

Family:  Lily (Liliaceae)

Hardy to zone 3 to 9

(Bear’s Garlic, Bears Garlic) Bulb-forming perennial native to Western and Central Europe.  This is the European form of ramps, a delightful woodland edible that can be eaten whole, usually lightly braised with other delicacies.  Plant prefers cool moist shade and rich soils of woodland or shade garden. Sow seeds in the fall for reliable germination in the spring.  Alternately, give 90 days cold, moist refrigeration, then sow outdoors in cool, moist shade.  Long term and ongoing germination is typical, so the planting area should be well marked and mulched to limit weeds.

Excellent results with these seeds. I ordered them twice and I will order more. I use whole plant for salads, soups, pasta, sauces, pizza, omelets . The taste is a cross between onions and garlic, but not as heavy or pungent as garlic cloves. Very healthy and tasty!

Hi Betty, No, it needs a cold winter. Try Garlic Chives, very dependable in Florida. We also recommend the Egyptian Onions. Its hot in Egypt.

hi angela, we’re finding the bear’s garlic to be adaptable to a shade situation even in warm climates. the bay area is so very beautiful, and so forgiving for a wide range of plant species, i am sure bear’s garlic could be introduced to the shade garden there. r

Hello, the germination rate is excellent but I have to tell you we cannot ship seeds to Brazil–the authorities in Brazil reject all seed shipments. richo

      Hello Mike,
I’ve had best results with starting them outdoors but its certainly worth a try. You might give the seed a short moist refrigeration before planting, and use a peaty mix. Richo

Hello Sally, These are seeds for planting. Therapeutically, bear’s garlic has no particular advantage over regular garlic, which is widely available in grocery stores.

Hi Michele, Bear’s garlic doesn’t make cloves. That’s regular garlic (Allium sativum) that makes the stinking rose. Bear’s Garlic is used more like a green onion, or actually more like ramps, if you’re familiar with that. richo

Hi Petrona, I don’t know specifically–you could try. I planted some three years ago and pretty much forgot about it and found the flat full of six-inch leaves this spring. So it can be done. It won’t take Florida sun, that’s for sure, but in a shade garden, watered occasionally, it might just work. Supposedly suitable for a Zone 9 max. Richo

Cal the Bear’s garlic bulb be used as an effective anti-biotic, like the regular garlic? Can the bulb be crushed and used as a poultice for rashes, infections, etc – like Allium sativum?

      Hi Wendy,
The bear’s garlic is not strong like regular garlic, it is in every way similar to ramps.

Hi Roxanne, thanks for wanting these, they are pretty special. YEs, the sooner they are planted the better. If you double-click on the photo you get the monograph that tells you more. Here’s a snippet: Plant prefers cool moist shade and rich soils of woodland or shade garden. Sow seeds in the fall for reliable germination in the spring. Alternately, give 90 days cold, moist refrigeration, then sow outdoors in cool, moist shade.
