Herbaceous perennial native to Central and South America, with a current worldwide distribution. Flowers oversize even for such a large plant, and completely tuned to the moon. Flaring trumpets, moonshine white, narcotically scented, almost enough to make you swoon! Traditional usage, external only (TWM): asthma, motion sickness, pain. All parts of the plant are toxic, no part of this plant should ever be taken internally. Plant prefers a sunny, mesic to dry location, and will grow in poor soil, sand or cobble. Space plants 3 feet apart.

Hi Alison, Thanks for writing. Moonflowers are fast growing and that’s why you get a big one–to assure flowers this year. they like a full sun position and fast-draining soil. you can mineral mulch to help assure overwintering. The sand also helps mark the spot as they are late risers the following spring. richo

Do you think I can I keep these growing year round indoors in full sun? They are my favorite plant but I live in Zone 4b and I don’t think they would stand a chance outdoors. Thanks!

Thanks for writing. Here’s one of my poems about this plant:
There is no logic in my loving this plant
The taste is toxic–delivers too much medicinal power
Yet without it my heart is rent
What is a warm summer night without the moonflower?
I do think you could grow this to flowers in the summer garden. As a potted indoor plant, given sufficient light, it would be similar to how we grow them in the heated greenhouse, where they remain aerial for most of the year. If my memory serves me right, though, it still seems like they flower only during the warmer months.
