Chickweed, Yunnan (Stellaria yunnanensis), packet of 30 seeds, organic

$3.95

Family:  Pink (Caryophyllaceae)

Hardy to Zones 8 to 12, otherwise grown as a potted plant and brought indoors for the winter.  Keep trimmed back.

(Qian-zhen-wan-xian-cao, Tuberous Chickweed) Perennial native to Southwestern China.  The plant makes a complex mass rangy, far-reaching stems studded conspicuously with long pedicels topped by white, starlike flowers that are similar in shape to our common chickweed flowers but about three times larger.  The thinly tuberous roots  of this wild Chinese food is the part used.  They are commonly cooked in soup.    Traditional usage (TCM): nutrient tonic.  Plant prefers part shade and moist ground.  Sow seed in spring–fast germinator and easy to grow. Prepare a fine seedbed or sow on surface of soil in pot, barely cover, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination.  Thin or set to garden at 1 foot spacing.

This is the kind of thing that makes deceased ethnobotonists sigh in their graves–2 native plants from the same genus occurring on opposite sides of the world used by native peoples for the same purpose–a veritable cross-cultural verification of herbal efficacy–a chickweed, if you will, used as a spring tonic in New York and in Kunming…
