$3.95$44.10

Family:  Pink (Caryophyllaceae)

Annual or overwintering annual.  60 days to maturity

Spreading groundcover native to all temperate zones, as far north as the Arctic.  Succulent, green leaves dotted upon maturity with white flowers to a height of 13 inches.  Traditional usage (TWM): Spring tonic, digestive, weight loss, salve ingredient.  Source of vitamins, flavonoids, and saponins.  Harvest fresh for a wholesome, succulent and tasty salad green. Plant prefers soils that were heavily manured or composted the previous growing season and have now mellowed into aged compost.  Try sowing it in the spot where that monumental zuchini died back.  Sow in fall or spring.  Mix small seed with sand to stretch it, strew seed on surface, press in, and keep moist until germination.  Grows best in cool soils. In zone 7 and up, the plant may be harvestable even in midwinter.

    Beautiful plants!

I wanted to increase the forage plants for my poultry. I felt sheepish buying “weed” seeds, but the naturally existing plants weren’t enough to keep up with my birds’ appetites.

I especially like to use it when brooding chicks, but didn’t even have any I could scrounge up the last time and barely found anything the time before!

I do not regret buying this chickweed! Much thicker, lusher growth than the naturally occurring chickweed on my property. The flowers are nicer too. I’m hoping cross-pollination will occur to improve the overall vigor in the chickweed on my property. Thanks for your hard work preserving and improving medicinal plants!

Look for chickweeds wherever you go, worldwide. They are a wonderful trailside chew, and will quickly right digestive woes. They are loaded with saponins that cleanse the system. Eat some greasy food sometime and feel how that is for your body and oral cavity. Then, eat a fistful of chickweed and feel how it cleanses you. Makes believers out of nonbelievers! I’ve seen Chickweed on 3 continents and suspect that it grows on every continent–different Stellaria spp., but recognizable by the starlike flowers and the clean taste.
