(Swiss Chard, White-stemmed Chard) Biennial cultigen related to the beet. Deeply savoyed leaves and white stalks typify this garden standby. Young leaves are sweet and may be consumed raw. White-stemmed chard is a little sweeter and less intensely flavored as opposed to red chard. Older leaves are nutrient dense and hold well in hot weather, making them a reasonable spinach substitute. Plant prefers regular garden conditions including rich soil, sun and water. Direct-seed in garden in spring for early greens, and for winter greens sow in August or September. Barely cover seed, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination. thin to 6 inches apart.
