Family:  Goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae) (also Amaranth, Amaranthaceae)

Hardy to Zones 4 to 8

(Swiss Chard, White-stemmed Chard) Biennial cultigen related to the beet.  Deeply savoyed leaves and white stalks typify this garden standby.  Young leaves are sweet and may be consumed raw.  White-stemmed chard is a little sweeter and less intensely flavored as opposed to red chard.  Older leaves are nutrient dense and hold well in hot weather, making them a reasonable spinach substitute. Plant prefers regular garden conditions including rich soil, sun and water.  Direct-seed in garden in spring for early greens, and for winter greens sow in August or September.  Barely cover seed, tamp well and keep evenly moist until germination.  thin to 6 inches apart.
