(Lebanon Cedar) Evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean and capable of reaching a height of 130 feet. Mentioned 75 times in The Bible. The strong and aromatic wood of this stately tree has been extensively used in construction, historically used for providing masts for the ships of the Phoenicians, framework for the pharaonic tombs and King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. The bark was used medicinally for treating leprosy, and the heartwood is distilled to make an expensive healing essential oil. Tree prefers full sun to part shade and is highly adaptable, growing in various soils, as long as they are well drained. Our seed is very plump and fertile, harvested from ripe cones from our own trees. Sow immediately on receipt. Use a greenhouse, cloche, or outdoor planting. Moderate temperatures spur rapid germination–30 to 60 degrees F. Barely cover seed, tamp securely and keep evenly moist until germination. Keep in half-light and work up in larger pots as needed. Takes 4 years from germination to outdoor planting. Space trees at least 30 feet apart.
