Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus), packet of 5 seeds

$3.95

Family:  Lily (Liliaceae) (also ascribed to Ruscacea and Asparagaceae–keeps jumping around, the plant is the plant, and has been around for 66 million years)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 12

Evergreen subshrub native to the Mediterranean basin, also the Canary Islands, British Isles and Caucasia.   Plant prefers part sun to shade and mesic to dry soils.  As a landscape accent, these are really excellent, and over here in the new world this plant is considered rare. In southern Europe, the extremely tough branches were made into brooms used by butchers.  Traditional usage: vascular problems including edema in the lower extremities and hemorrhoids. Plant prefers shade and fast draining, dryish soils. Multicycle germinator.  The seeds must be planted in warm medium and kept moist for an extended period of time before germination will occur.  6 month germination times are not uncommon, and it is wrong to prematurely discard the planting.  Plant 2 or 3 seeds to a gallon pot and keep warm in the greenhouse and water daily.  Results will eventually occur.

5 (large) seeds/pkt., Open Pollinated, Untreated, NO GMO’s

Germination note:  Seeds removed from the fresh fruit and sown on 11/16/04 germinated with volcanic vigor on or around 4/22/06.  Patience, patience, patience.  RAC
