Bowiea (Bowiea volubilis), packet of 10 seeds, organic

$3.95

Family:  Hyacinthaceae

Zones 9 to 12.  Normally grown as a potted plant.  Protect from frost.
(Sea onion, igibisila, gifisila, umagaqana, knolklimop, “climbing potato”) Scaled, green, bulb native to the eastern parts of South Africa.  The fascinating bulbs, which nestle on the surface of the soil like eggs, or may be buried more deeply, give rise to convoluted, smooth stems that flower in the spring to early summer. Very easy to grow–plant needs fast-draining soil and relishes root constriction.  The light from a window, any window, is usually sufficient to keep the specimen healthy and vibrant.  Provide an upright stick for the tops to hold onto, or situate the pot close to another plant and allow it to (happily) drape.  These are really, really easy to grow, a collector’s item, but definitely not food.  When the plants go winter dormant, reduce watering to a bare minimum.  To plant seeds, use cactus mix.  Sprinkle seeds on top, cover with sand and compress to hold in place, cover with 1/4 inch white pumice. Keep warm and in the light, water only once daily.  Bulbs grow faster if left buried.

I ordered and planted this packet in cactus mix last summer and had very good (8/10) germination. All eight have now re-emerged from hibernation and I’m looking forward to the results of another season’s growth! Definitely recommend!
