Bleeding Heart, Pacific (Dicentra formosa), packet of 30 seeds, organic

$3.95

Bleeding Heart, Pacific (Dicentra formosa)
Family: Poppy (Papaveraceae)
Herbaceous perennial forest dweller native to the Pacific Northwest.  Does well in pots.  With its finely dissected, bluish-green foliage and rose colored, heart-shaped flowers, this plant is a striking focal point of shade garden or woodlands. The clumping plant, especially when situated at the base of coniferous trees or next to mossy rocks, will spread luxuriously, drape, and produce in a good year a myriad of pendulous blossoms. The fresh roots of bleeding heart were used by native peoples for treating toothache and as a vermifuge, but the plant is acrid and internal use should be approached with caution! Plant prefers moist, acidic soils and part shade. Sow seeds in the fall or very early spring for germination in cool soils in the spring.  If overwintering of the planting is not possible, give 3 months moist refrigeration (in peat) before planting.

  1. Question

    Cyndi

I absolutely love bleeding hearts but live on a tropical island. I could find a less hot place for this plant but how would it do in zone 11?

Hi Cyndi, Lucky you living in the tropics! I don’t think this is a good choice for you, it is highly dependent on cool coniferous woodlands. richo
