Family:  Legume (Fabaceae)

Annual.  70 days to maturity.

(Pioneer Pole Bean, Ram’s Head Bean, Kahnawake Mohawk Bean)

This annual climbing bean is an heirloom Iroquois cultivar that dates back to prehistory.  We are always looking for truly vigorous climbers, and this one satisfied us–they grew fast and tall!  This type is also among the most productive of pole beans, with flat pods 5 inches long that quickly plump up.  We cleaned out 10 lbs of dry beans from a 50 foot row.   These are a pinto type, which are best dried and cooked up for chili or for tacos, beans and rice, beans and corn, etc.  They store indefinitely.  Plant prefers full sun, rich soil and a trellis or corn stalks to climb upon.  In the spring, after the soil has truly warmed up, plant seeds 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart or in hills 7 seeds to a hill. Harvest in the autumn, when the pods become crinkly-dry and beige in color.

Amazingly vigorous plants grew well all season and produced a large amount of beans from a small section of plants. This variety will be a permanent addition to my garden!
