Hardy to Zone 10 to 12, will withstand slight frost.  Loss of leaves not necessarily fatal.

(Emblic Myrobalan, Amalaki) Evergreen tree native to India. Amla trees are beautiful, with feathery-leaved branches and a holy presence.  Amla bears a fruit that is among the highest in vitamin C among all fruits worldwide.  Traditional use (Ayurveda): asthma, bronchitis, dysentery, anemia.  Fruits are an ingredient in triphala.  The plant prefers regular soil and water, sun to part shade, and does well at elevation, as long as it isn’t too cold.  They do well in  pots, placed on the patio or in the greenhouse during the summer and brought in for the winter.  Scarify seeds lightly on medium grit sandpaper and sow just subsurface in standard potting soil and keep very warm and in the light until germination, which occurs in 2 to 3 weeks.  Work up in successively larger pots.
