Amaranth, Love Lies Bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus), packet of 100 seeds

$2.95

Family:  Amaranth (Amaranthacea)

Annual.  50 days to maturity

(Pendant Amaranth, Tassel Flower, Velvet Flower, Foxtail Amaranth, Rasta Dreads)  Annual.  50 days.  This is the showiest of Amaranth types, with very large heads of drooping, crimson flowers.  This is a black-seeded amaranth.  The red color is due to the content of betacyanins, and the leaves are an edible and tasty potherb when picked young.  This is a vegetable amaranth, not a grain amaranth–grain amaranths like our orange or golden amaranth have blonde seeds.  Plant prefers full sun and regular garden soil.  Direct seed in the spring garden.  Press in, keep evenly moist and in the light.   Thin to 2 feet  apart.

100 seeds/pkt, open pollinated, untreated, NO GMOs

    Hey Richo. Couple questions…
Are the leaves only edible or tasty when young or can they be harvested at any time?
Will this variety be grow well in a 25gal container/grow bag..?
    Lastly, does Amaranth make tea?

Hi Luis, this isn’t the best amaranth for edible leaves. The best choice for that is red spinach amaranth (bayam) which you can find on this website. That one, the leaves are good at all stages of growth. The love lies bleeding leaves are best harvested young. Amaranth does not make tea–the grain types make cereal. r

hi morph, some people say so but i don’t eat black amaranth seeds, i find they pass right through without digesting. i suggest “orange” or “Golden giant” for the blonde, edible seeds. delicious. r
