Achira (Canna edulis), packet of 5 seeds, organic

$4.95

Family: Canna (Cannaceae)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 12

(Indian Shot) Broadleaved perennial to 5 feet, native to South America and West Indies.  The plant may act as an herbaceous perennial in colder zones and may be mulched to overwinter. The tubers are a source of starch, very similar to arrowroot, which this plant resembles.  The rhizomes and young sprouts are edible, mild tasting, gummy when fresh, tasty, high in potassium and protein.  Plant prefers full sun and deep, moist soils.  It is tolerant of clay and a wide range of pH, including acidic and alkaline.  Scarify seeds on medium sandpaper and soak overnight in warm water, then plant in warm conditions.  Germination takes 20 to 90 days.  Long germination times but dependable.  Work plants up in pots.  Space plants 6 feet apart.

Would love to know what plants are deer resistant that grow in zone 7… this would help me to try to learn how to grow my own herbs

      Hi Emily,
Zone 7 is a good zone for growing mediterranean herbs, all of which are quite deer resistant: oregano, sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary–these deer do not like. Deer are particularly fond of anything soft-leaved and mucilaginous (marshmallow, chicory, lime trees).

Are these seeds produced by the potted achira variety you sell? May I ask if the achira you sell is a named clone or if you have any information on the original source? Thanks

Hi Noah, Yes, when wee sell organic plants and organic seeds of a particular genus and species its pretty much across the board that they are the from the same parentage. Also, as much as possible, we sell the original open-pollinated form, not named clones. Richo
